Planning Starts for SaRCiSP in Nueva Esparta, Venezuela

SaRCiSP has started planning a locally led and co-designed project for the state of Nueva Esparta in Venezuela. The state is made up of Margarita Island and the two smaller islands of Coche and Cubagua, comprising eleven municipalities. The plan covers all of them from the start, so no municipality is left to a later plan.

Where the work starts

The first work is planned for the El Tirano–El Cardón corridor in the municipality of Antolín del Campo. There, a damaged wastewater line has contaminated a drainage channel and the beach at El Cardón during heavy rain.

How SaRCiSP plans the state

SaRCiSP plans Nueva Esparta as one system rather than a collection of separate projects. Each intervention is considered within a wider economic, ecological and logistical context, taking into account where materials originate, how they move and how different activities support one another.

Interventions will include sargassum processing, food forests developed using the Tolou Keur methodology, an assessment of the islands’ water and sanitation systems, and deployment of TG-TRIF (Transboundary Resilience Intelligence Framework) to support the management and mitigation of rainfall-related flooding. These are components of a broader, integrated approach in which environmental management, essential infrastructure and local economic activity are planned together.
